​Congratulations to all of the students who completed AP Exams last week. As for the Music Department... May Madness continues! This is a long update; please stay on top ofdeadlines, rehearsals, and fundraisers!

Rehearsals & Area Concert - Week of 5/20 to 5/24
- Monday: 3:00-4:30 pm - Rehearsal for all students, including all percussionists.
               3:30-6:00 pm - Color Guard Practice.
- Tuesday: 3:00-4:30 pm - Percussion Ensemble.
                3:00-6:00 pm - Leadership Interviews.
- Wednesday: 3:00 pm - Set-Up in West Gym. Warm-Up & Rehearse.
                    4:00 pm - 30 minute Break; change, bring food to eat (there won't be time to leave campus).
                    5:00 pm - Area Concert Begins!
                    5:50 pm - Move Band to East Gym.
                    6:00 pm - Perform at Premios Awards!
                    6:15 pm - Clean Up West Gym & Put Away Equipment! Dismissed once all clear.
- Thursday: No Rehearsal! The students have been working diligently. I'll give them Thursday off considering Wednesday was such a long day.
- Friday: 3:00-4:30 pm - Jazz Band!

Area Concert & Concession Assignments!
Please turn in your section's concession assignment as soon as possible! The list is attached. Arrive early and park in the lot off 183rd Street! Parking is going to be strongly impacted.


Banquet Stuff...
I'm looking forward to a fantastic event! We're going to have a large CHS music community in attendance!
- Seniors, please submit your photo ASAP! 
- Late payments for Banquet will be accepted until Wednesday 5/22. If you missed the deadline, you have a few days to pay for tickets! Order Form attached.


New Booster Board Elected!
On Tuesday, May 14th the CHS Music Boosters held their 2nd annual board election. A huge thank you to our departing board members: Kirit Chauhan (President), Annie Prajak (VP Outreach), and Romy Galicia (VP Percussion) for their time, dedication, and support of our students. Congratulations to the board's newest members: Raj Chevvuri (VP Band), Donna Garcia (VP Outreach), and Tim Ventura (VP Percussion). Also, congratulations to our returning board members, some with new positions: Jonathan Barcelos (President), Jennifer Arballo (Treasurer), Lisa Sollecito (Secretary), Kristal Huerta (VP Color Guard), Sandra Mendoza (VP Fundraising), Andrea Ellison (VP Hospitality), Peri Rasko (VP Jazz), Shirley Tai (VP Uniforms).

Running a music department is far more work than one person can handle. The parents listed above have been instrumental to the program this year. A sincere thank you to everyone involved. I encourage you to volunteer some time, get involved with a planning committee, and see what being a booster is all about! Every year booster parents thank me for the opportunity to be involved with their children's lives. My response is always the same... "It couldn't happen without you!"

Banquet Help Needed!
We're in need of helpers for banquet set-up and clean-up. Please email Annie Prajak if you can kindly spare some time <annie.prajak@gmail.com>.

Shifts Needed:
- 1:00-3:00 pm: Set-Up
- End of Banquet + One Hour: Clean-Up

Firework Fundraiser!
We will continue to host a Firework Stand on the corner of South and Norwalk (7-11 Parking Lot) to raise money for our student's contributions. Keep an eye out for a detailed email about volunteering to earn money in-kind to the booster program. Today students will bring home Pre-Sale Vouchers to raise funds for themselves! In the past there have been students who raise their entire Fall contribution using only the Firework Pre-Sale Vouchers! It's a great opportunity!

Fall Regiment of Gold Contributions
Speaking of fundraising for Fall... very soon I will be releasing the donation amounts and due dates for the 2019 Marching Band season! These contributions go towards paying our elite Staff, show design, competition fees, transportation fees, costume purchases, Finals Weekend in Fresno, and much more! If you know you're going to be financially strained, please take advantage of the Fireworks Fundraiser opportunity!

Area Concert Concession Assignments
We will be having a simple concession stand for the Area Concert and Premios next Wednesday, 5/22. We need everyone's help to maximize this fundraiser as we prepare for the 2019 marching band season! Please View the attached PDF for section assignments. Note that all items must be store bought and pre-packaged.

Cerritos Area Concert & Premios Del Oros Performances - Wednesday, 5/22 - 5:00 pm
This year we get to have two performances in one day due to logistical challenges with facilities. At least that is one less evening that students need to be at school... Students will need to remain at CHS from the end of 6th period until we're done packing up equipment after the Premios Awards (roughly 6:30-7 pm). Attire is Concert Black with plain black ties for men and formal shoes for all. If a student is receiving a Premios Award they may wear different attire, but they must speak with me about it first to make sure it is concert appropriate.

***Parking***
Please park in the North Lot off 183rd Street! We will have the blacktop open for close parking spots and extra space.

Banquet Orders Due!
It's going to be a great time and I hope to see everyone there to celebrate a year of musical excellence. Get your banquet orders submitted to the lockbox by this Friday, 5/17! Check with your students to make sure they actually submitted the money (many times it gets forgotten in their backpacks...). Seniors, get your photos submitted to me for the dedications!

Percussion Ensemble & Jazz Band Branch Out
Our students continue to impress audiences around Southern California with performances from our smaller ensembles. The Jazz Band performed their 'gig' repertoire at last week's District Office Employee Breakfast. Rumors of their excellent rendition of The Beatle's Yesterday with Katelyn Robinson singing are spreading quickly... The Percussion Ensemble traveled to San Marcos HS to perform in the annual San Diego Percussion Festival. Adjudicators from the San Diego Symphony were present and gave the students very positive feedback; especially for their first year focusing on concert percussion. Thank you to all the parents who attended! I look forward to developing our percussion program in future years for both the battery and percussion ensemble.

May is here and I'm excited to end our year with many exciting events! But first, a warm thank you to everyone who attended our Spring Formal Concert! It was a great night for the CHS Music community. There are many attachments on this email including an updated Spring & Summer Calendar, itineraries for jazz and percussion performances, and Music Banquet Order Forms! Please get those payments in by May 17th!

Music Program Banquet - Sunday, June 2nd, 2019 - 4:00 pm
We will be hosting our annual Banquet to celebrate a great year of musical growth and accomplishment! The cost is $20 per person (students and family must purchase tickets). This will include Dinner, beverages, and dessert! There will be awards, recognitions, 2019 leadership announcements, the 2019 Fall show reveal, and dancing! There's a lot happening in the music department at Cerritos High School! This update will take us through the first half of May.

1st Annual Spring Formal Concert, Thursday 4/18, 7 pm, $10

Bring the whole family to our first annual Spring Formal Concert this Thursday at the Cerritos HS Theater! Enjoy performances by the Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Choir, and Wind Ensemble!
The pre-sale form is attached so reserve your tickets early! Thursday's rehearsal schedule is altered to allow for sound checks in the theater: 3:00 - Wind Ensemble, 3:40 - Percussion Ensemble, 4:00 - Jazz Band, 6:30 - Call Time for All Students, 7:00 - Concert Begins.

Winter Guard Completes First Season!
Congratulations to the Winter Guard for completing their first season under coach Robert Morales; and also, most of the member's first seasons! I'm very proud of the team for qualifying in Division Scholastic AA in their first year; a competitive division that is hard to break into. The team continued to improve over a daunting 5 month season and I'm excited to see their future growth!
Auditions are on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

ABC Jazz Fest - Tuesday, April 16th
Artesia High School will host our first annual ABC Jazz Fest tomorrow! The Jazz calendar with the remaining performances is attached. Our band performs at 6:30 pm. This free event will be focused on students supporting each other and having fun playing jazz! There are no ratings, scores, or even judges... we just want to give the students a chance to perform for each other and support jazz in ABC.

Percussion Ensemble to Perform at San Diego County Festival!
On Saturday, May 11th the Percussion Ensemble will perform at the annual Percussion Festival at San Marcos High School! This is an awesome opportunity to be part of a growing focus nation-wide on concert percussion! Students will get to see a percussion master class by San Diego professionals, perform for a supportive audience, and watch the San Marcos Percussion Orchestra (one of the strongest high school percussion groups in the state). The itinerary is attached. Students must carpool to the site so start organizing rides now! Traffic into San Diego can be awful; leave plenty of time for the drive.

Booster Board Update!
The Cerritos High School Music Boosters will vote for a new slate of board officers at our monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 14th, 6:30 pm. We will also be voting to make minor revisions to our by-laws to better serve the students. All are encouraged to attend. Attached are the revised by-laws for your review. If you would like to make a board nomination 'from the floor' please contact our President, Kirit Chauhan, at chsmboosters@gmail.com.

Our first annual Spring Formal is quickly approaching. Purchase your tickets pre-sale to avoid missing out! You'll see performances by the Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, Choir, and Wind Ensemble!
Print the attached form and submit with your payments to the Band Room lockbox.

San Francisco Itineraries...
Have been emailed separately. Please review and budget for meals on your own.

No Music Rehearsals Thursday (4/4) or Friday (4/5)
Due to the San Francisco Trip there will be no rehearsals Thursday or Friday.

​Winter Guard Earns Gold!
Congratulations to the Winter Guard team for earning their first gold medal under coach Robert Morales! The team is working hard and pushing to the end of the season... Only two performances remain. Watch them this Sunday 3/24 at Tustin High School, 4:20 pm! 1171 El Camino Real, Tustin, CA 92780

Wind Ensemble Earns Superior! 
Congratulations to the Wind Ensemble for earning superior (the highest) ratings at the ABC Band Festival last week! I'm very proud of the progress this group has made!

Spring Formal Concert - Thursday, April 18th - CHS Theater - 7 pm - $10 pre-sale 
Pre-sale tickets will be available next week. Our theater only holds 300 people; let's pack the house! See performances by the Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Choir, and Wind Ensemble.

Pechanga Turnaround This Saturday, 3/30 - 9 am Check-In @ Bloomfield Parking Lot
It's not too late, there are still spots available on our bus! Some of you have emailed Mrs. Mendoza, but have not submitted your payment yet! Submit your $40 per adult to the lockbox ASAP! We'll have coffee, donuts, games, prizes, and much more planned. Pechanga Casino has great places to eat like the Great Oak Steakhouse, Umi Sushi and Oyster Bar, and the World Buffet!

​Festival Season is upon us! This year's season includes two performances and a trip to San Francisco and it highlights the work that students have been rehearsing since January!

Spring Formal Concert - Thursday, April 18th - CHS Theater - 7 pm - $10
Support the music ensembles of CHS as they perform their concert repertoire! You'll hear from the Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Choir, and Wind Ensemble. Let's pack the house and enjoy some great music!

Huge Thanks to Open House Concession Volunteers! 
Many thanks to all the parents that helped us have a successful concession stand at Open House. As the music program continues to grow, every dollar counts. I couldn't offer the students a top-notch experience without your help.

Make-Up Rehearsal - Tuesday, March 19th, 3-4:30 pm
Tomorrow is our make-up rehearsal in preparation for the ABC Band Fest the following day. 

Pechanga Turnaround Coming Soon!
In less than two weeks we'll have our Pechanga Casino Turnaround trip! There is still spots available on our bus, so contact Mrs. Mendoza and submit your $40 per adult to the lockbox ASAP! ABC Band Festival - Whitney HS - Wednesday, March 20th - 5:30 pm Performance
The Wind Ensemble call time on Wednesday is 4:30 pm at the Whitney High School black-box next to the theater. There will not be rehearsal right after school on Wednesday, but students are expected to be on time and dressed in concert attire.

Jazz Band gets their Groove On
Congratulation to the Jazz Band for playing two gigs in just one week! The students performed at the CHS Open House last Tuesday and the ABC Parent Leadership Conference on Saturday morning. The band only rehearses one day a week but still manages to perform like seasoned veterans. I'm excited for the future of jazz at CHS!

Spring & Summer Events & Rehearsal Schedule on the Google Calendar!

As we get closer to concert season I'll need to be making adjustments to our 7th period rehearsal schedule. Things like adding percussion, adjusting for performances, and rehearsing with only the students attending the San Francisco Trip come into play. Please review the calendar at CerritosHSmusic.org to learn about this minor changes. To make up for the cancelled rehearsal last week, I am adding a rehearsal on Tuesday, March 19 from 3-4:30 pm. If you are not attending San Francisco, you are excused from rehearsals labeled as 'San Fran. Rehearsal'. Please plan accordingly.

Jazz Band Performs 2 In-A-Row!

The Jazz band will perform next week at both the CHS Open House and the ABC Board Breakfast! Check the Calendar for times!

​Greetings! I missed my weekly update last week, but this week's parent info meeting should make up for it.

Parent Informational Meeting - Thursday 2/28 - 6:30 pm
I'll be talking about the music classes for next year, spring schedule, concert attire, Summer dates, and everything in-between. Students attending San Francisco must have a parent in attendance. 

Winter Guard Medals!
In their first winter guard performance since the 2017 season, the Winter Guard earned the Bronze medal at Aliso Niguel HS! Their show entitled Guiding Light is shaping up to be very enjoyable and I'm proud of all their hard work!

Last Winter Guard Payment - $100
Due Monday March 4th.


Seeking Donations/Volunteers for Upcoming Fundraisers
We have two fundraisers approaching; Concessions at Open House Night and the Pechanga Turnaround Trip. In addition to needing volunteers for concessions night, we'll need donations for the concessions stand and gift cards and/or food items for the Pechanga bus ride to use as prizes and goodies. Keep an eye out for the Sign-Up Genius email from Andrea Ellison for more info.

Upcoming performances!
Many performances coming up! Jazz band on Tuesday, March 12th, 5:30 pm @ CHS Open House. Spring Formal Concert on Thursday April 18th @ the CHS Theater. March 20th the Wind Ensemble will perform at the ABC Concert Festival! Check the spring calendar and mark it on yours!
